I formed the outline of the scenes for this story intending to write a treatment, but found it was no fun at all because the form seemed to lack all the fun details that writing brings to a story. I can't see why anyone would formally write a treatment unless they were forced to. So, I fleshed out each of the scenes and turned it into a short story. (Besides, a screenplay still has to be written from something, whether one starts from a short story or a teatment.)
It was a useful exercise, though, because intending to write for film forced me to think more about plot and setting than I usually do - I don't think I could have written this story otherwise. And, laying out the scenes ahead of time, meant that I already knew where each scene was going as I wrote it.
So, my lesson for this week is to imagine an embryonic story idea as a film and picture the scenes visually, so that the sights, sounds, and action may all be considered and rendered with detail.
