Man, it's one thing to goof around with pals and have a few laughs, but it is quite another to stare at a blank sheet of paper and "be funny" on demand. Now I can appreciate why sitcoms and late-night talk shows have teams of comedy writers - the back-and-forth interplay of personalities seems like a key ingredient. I am amazed that solo comedians can write material by/for themselves.
So my lesson this week is to never accept any assignment to "be funny" without a familiar collaborator - and even then I should probably demur.
