This story was written to be a ‘prequel’ to “Sitting on Dynamite”. I definitely used this week’s Challenge topic for inspiration, but I didn’t really answer the Challenge directly.
Reader critiques suggest a problem with the story's ‘point of view’. I do not yet really understand the problem, but it’s clear there is more I need to learn on this question. While it is easy to simply put pen to paper and claim to be ‘writing’, there is undoubtedly a long-established craft to effective storytelling. It seems foolish and counterproductive to be ignorant of the best-practices of the craft to which one aspires.
So the lesson I hope to learn from this week is that, although ‘rules are made to be broken’ and deviating from a norm can itself be used to good effect, it is a good idea to actually understand what you are deviating from.

Nice introductory story of a sub-mariner's life. Were you in the Navy?
Thanks. No, just faking it.

Look at #30 here for a more detailed explanation of the problems with omniscient POV. (Link courtesy of Rain.)
